VISIT PRIMER · WHAT HAPPENS

A real visit leaves room for questions and follow-up.

A good visit gathers the needed health information, leaves room for questions, involves a licensed clinician, explains the decision and provides follow-up.

Three connected points labelled HEALTH QUESTIONS, CONVERSATION and PLAN. HEALTH QUESTIONS CONVERSATION PLAN

The clinician must be licensed to treat you in your state

As of September 2026, clinicians generally must be allowed to practise in the state the patient is in at the time of the visit.

There is no single American rule for online prescribing; state rules genuinely differ.

A form can start the visit

A first appointment can sometimes begin with a form instead of live video. It must still give the clinician enough information to provide the level of care professionals are expected to provide.

A fixed form with no way to ask follow-up questions does not provide enough information for a proper medical decision.

Know who will answer questions later

Before the visit ends, get clear on who answers later questions, who reviews any lab result, and when an in-person exam would be needed.

A decision can be “not enough information yet.” That is still a decision, and it can be a useful one.

CHAPTER RECAP

Keep this: the screen is only the setting. The review of your health, the licence, the questions and the follow-up are the care.
